It Happened in Brooklyn (1948)

This classic musical was unfamiliar to me, but I was more than happy to make my acquaintance with “It Happened in Brooklyn.” Frank Sinatra stars as Danny Miller, a young man who has been serving overseas for the last four years. It’s finally time for him to return home. He and a bunch of other military men are staying one last night in England at a nice manor house before shipping out the next day, and he meets up with Jamie (Peter Lawford) a young composer who doesn’t know how to have fun. Danny tells Jamie that there’s nothing but … Continue reading

In less than two weeks New York City will host the largest Halloween celebration in the country. I wrote about the Village Halloween Parade in a previous blog and detailed how more than 2 million people turn out each October 31st to watch 50,000 enthusiastic costumed characters, more than 50 marching bands, and dozens of giant puppets make their way up Sixth Avenue. Many consider the spooktacular spectacle the kick off to the Big Apple’s holiday season. In the coming weeks the famous city will be packed with visitors looking to take in the magical holiday festivities that New York … Continue reading

“Tom and Jerry,””The Flintstones,””Yogi Bear,””Huckleberry Hound and Friends,””Top Cat,””Scooby-Doo,””Johnny Quest,””The Jetsons” and “Animal Follies.” If you grew up watching any of these animated series you may be saddened to hear that Joe Barbera, one of its creators has died. In 1937 Barbera and partner Bill Hanna formed the legendary team of Hanna-Barbera and in the decades since their cartoon creations have entertained generations of children. Sadly, almost exactly 70 years after his hiring at the cartoon factory, Barbera died Monday of natural causes with his wife Sheila at his side, a spokesman for the family told news reporters. He was … Continue reading

Chickerella — Mary Jane and Herm Auch

Ever since reading and reviewing “Ashes of Roses” by Mary Jane Auch, I’ve been on the lookout for more of her work. I was very pleasantly surprised to happen upon this children’s picture book. “Chickerella” is the story of Cinderella, but I’m sure you’ve guessed there’s a twist. Yep, our heroine is a chicken. Her mother was carried away by a fox, and her father remarried, bringing stepsisters Ovumelda and Cholestera into the family. The stepmother’s smile gave Chickerella hen bumps. It wasn’t long before she sent Chickerella’s father off on a wild goose chase and turned Chickerella into a … Continue reading

Where Were You When The World Stopped Turning?

Today marks the five year anniversary of a tragic event or series of events, that changed our history books forever. As scrapbookers, most of us commemorated the events of the day by doing a scrapbook layout. In fact, I created mine during a scrapbook challenge on a message board that I belong to. It was five years ago that I created that layout, and it was simply nothing more than a “this day in history” type of page. I didn’t do much journaling besides to explain the events and what unfolded throughout the day. I included a time line and … Continue reading
