Homeschooling Glossary (Books Parents Should Read) H pt1

As I mentioned in the introduction, new homeschooling parents should learn as much about homeschooling as possible by reading many different sources. Here continues my Homeschool Glossary of books parents should read. Home School Heroes: The Struggle & Triumph of Home Schooling in America by Christopher Klicka (Paperback – Aug 14, 2006) Many homeschoolers celebrate the freedom to homeschool without really understanding how hard other homeschoolers fought to gain that freedom. After reading Home School Heroes, you and your family will appreciate just how important it is to remain active in promoting homeschool freedoms. Cristopher Klicka, of the HSLDA, wrote … Continue reading

Do Your Parents Resent Your In-Laws?

Here’s an odd conundrum or maybe it’s not so odd, but I’ve had more than one note from a couple encountering this particular issue and whether it’s the bride’s parents or the groom’s – how do you cope with it when your parents don’t like your in-laws? For Christa in North Carolina, she describes it as walking a tightrope while juggling especially around the holidays. She and her husband have three children and instead of having one large holiday with the whole family together they spend one part of the holidays with one set of grandparents and the other part … Continue reading

The Baby Blog Week in Review for December 23-29

It’s been crazy this month here in the Baby Blog and we haven’t always been as on top of things as I would have liked to be. We’ll be making some changes here in January in order to bring you the best we can on time and every day. In the meanwhile, let’s take a look at our last week here in December of 2006 as we get ready to welcome the Baby New Year. Saturday, December 23 In The Women in Our Lives and The Men in Our Lives we looked at the fact that we need the men … Continue reading

To My Parents

Dear Mom and Dad, I’ve been writing some blogs on parenting and as I have, I realize who I owe credit to for instilling values in me. I don’t think any of us were perfect, but it’s very clear that you loved me and did your very best in raising me. Mom, I thank you for showing me what selflessness means. You put so many things in your life on hold for us kids. You had the option to abort me or place me in an adoptive home, but you chose to rise above and make it work. You faithfully … Continue reading

Honoring Your Mother and Father

I was fortunate enough to be raised in a loving home with both my mom and my dad. It’s not difficult to find ways to honor and respect them today because they were good to us. I know not everyone can say this about their parents. When asked how one honors a mother or father they don’t respect, I had to sit and really think about this one. Commandment number five of the Ten Commandments given by God states in Exodus 20:12 “Honor your father and your mother…” In Ephesians 6:2 furthers the point, “’Honor your father and mother.’ Which … Continue reading

How Not to Go Broke Celebrating Halloween

(All treat no trick) You don’t need to be a parent to know that celebrating Halloween is not cheap. These days dressing up as a naughty nun and gorging on 100 Grand bars can really set you back, and not just spiritually. The cost of costumes, candy, decorations and fillings for cavities caused by giving into your Laffy Taffy addiction is scary expensive. And, if you have multiple kids to costume and provide school treats for, the total cost of the holiday can be even more frightening. In 2011, Halloween surpassed Valentine’s Day as the second most expensive holiday celebrated … Continue reading

Frightening Halloween Candy

Who buys Halloween candy this early? Places like Wal-Mart, Target and Walgreens have had their spooktacular holiday displays up since Labor Day, but that doesn’t mean you have to succumb to their marketing ploy… Mom. Yes, my mom is a candy company’s dream customer. She is the sucker purchasing pumpkin-shaped lollipops, snack-size candy bars and other sugary sweet Halloween treats weeks in advance of the pagan holiday honoring the dead. And while my mom and others like her are responsible for keeping Willy Wonka’s smile from fading, it’s a different story with dentists. Many teeth experts are already sounding the … Continue reading

The Freedom to Homeschool

At this time of year, of course we’re all thinking about the freedoms we enjoy in our country. We think about the brave men and women who, for countless generations, have fought to preserve those freedoms, some out on the battlefields and some here on the homefront, holding things together, organizing rallies, raising money. I can’t say enough to express my gratitude for the way these people have overcome their fears, their homesickness, their fatigue, and their worry about personal safety to help keep me and my family free. One freedom I particularly wish to talk about today is the … Continue reading

Children Who Don’t Fit the Mold

Children come in so many different packages, and discovering who they are is like opening up a wonderful present. You never know what you’re going to get when you have a baby—you hope they take after you, and they will, but they’ll also have their own way of looking at the world that is both fresh and frustrating as you try to guide them to making right choices. Sometimes a homeschool setting is just what these children need to find their true path. I thought about this as I continued my conversation with ToriAnn Perkey. She said, “My oldest daughter … Continue reading

Memorial Day Military Scrapbooks

It’s unfortunate that many of us only consider honoring our military heroes when major holidays roll around. I am guilty as charged. Often I lose sight of the fact that there are tens of thousands of men and women overseas fighting for my family’s freedoms while their own spouses, children and parents eagerly wait for their safe return. Yesterday I popped into my local scrapbook store to purchase a few last embellishments for my daughter’s end of the school year scrapbook and I passed by a large display of military-themed scrapbook supplies. The owner of the store has a nephew … Continue reading
