For the Strength of Youth Series: Sexual Purity

Intimacy between a husband and wife is a beautiful thing. It can bind you together in a way that strengthens you both and solidifies your relationship. It is both an expression of love and the means for the creation of children—both of which are amazing blessings. But intimacy outside of marriage is damaging to both relationships and to individuals emotionally and mentally which is why Latter-day saints place such an emphasis on staying sexually pure. The For the Strength of Youth pamphlet outlines some of the guidelines for Latter-day Saints of all ages. Being sexually pure is required for entering … Continue reading

What is Family Purity

Before a child is conceived, its soul is in Heaven, learning Torah and waiting to be united with a body. A lot goes on in this higher form of existence, and it is even determined whom the person will marry. However, the parents do have a role to play in influencing certain kinds of souls to descend and to become their children. One of the ways parents can produce healthy, happy offspring is through having pure thoughts during conception and following the laws of family purity. What is family purity? Is it a set of rules or a frame of … Continue reading

Why We Wear White

If there’s one universal symbol of a wedding it’s a white dress. Ask anyone off the street the meaning behind that dress and they’d say it symbolizes purity, even virginity. We keep adhering to the supposed tradition of a white wedding dress and the meaning behind it, even if that latter part isn’t usually relevant anymore. Almost every woman wears a white dress to her wedding. The most common reason for deviation is if it’s a second (or third or fourth, etc.) marriage, when it’s not as scandalous to acknowledge that the implied “purity” of the white gown isn’t exactly … Continue reading

Spending Time With My Sister Part VII

That evening family began to arrive for the baby’s baptism which would take place on the following day. My sister’s in-laws were the first to arrive around dinner time. The pizzas we had purchased earlier in the week would be dinner. While my brother-in-law was getting together hors’d oeuvres and my sister was ensuring that the baby was good and nursed (in preparation for the attentions from family), I made red velvet cupcakes. My sister had decided that the celebratory cake in honor of her daughter’s baptism should symbolize the holy spirit and purity, thus red velvet cupcakes with white … Continue reading

Yes, I Teach My Teens Abstinence

Despite all of the sex education being taught in school, the condoms that are being made available on some high school campuses and the trend of “friends with benefits,” I have chosen to, yes, teach my teens abstinence. Abstinence teaching is not given much thought. If it is taught in sex education it is more likely a topic that is quickly glossed over. Not much attention is given to that concept because we seem so sure that every teenager in America is going to have sex whether we like it or not. My personal thought on that is we have … Continue reading

China Adoption Book Review Series: Wanting a Daughter, Part Two: Chinese Do Adopt Daughters

My last blog shared some of Kay Ann Johnson’s research from her book Wanting a Daughter, Needing a Son. This blog continues with more of Johnson’s research, this time in an area which I have never seen addressed in all the reading I’ve done about adoption in China. This topic is the adoption of Chinese foundlings by Chinese parents in China. Johnson began her research interested in the situation of birthparents who abandoned children. She soon discovered a greater interest in what became of the children. Only a minority, she says, (her book was published in 2004) are adopted abroad, … Continue reading

China Adoption Book Review: Wanting a Daughter, Needing a Son

Kay Ann Johnson is a professor of Asian Studies and Politics at Hampshire College. Yet when she adopted her daughter from a Chinese orphanage in 1991, she felt not only the anxiety of participating in what was then a new adoption program, but also a great desire to learn more about her daughter’s story, or at least the story of many girls like her. Why are children, especially girls, abandoned in China? What consequences—emotional and practical—do the birthparents face? Do most foundlings enter the orphanage system? Johnson’s 2004 book, Wanting a Daughter, Needing a Son: Abandonment, Adoption and Orphanage Care … Continue reading

The Return of the Jonas Brothers

If you have tween or teen girls in your house, you’d better plug your ears: the Disney channel has renewed both of the Jonas Brothers’ television series. “JONAS,” the hit sibling band’s sitcom-style series, will return mid-2010. Meanwhile, season 2 of “Jonas Brothers: Living the Dream,” will debut earlier in 2010. “Living the Dream,” the Jonas Brothers’ short-form reality series, is likely returning earlier because it can be filmed while the brothers focus on other projects, such as their current European tour. Gary Marsh, President of Entertainment of Disney Channels Worldwide, says of the show, “We can deliver something to … Continue reading
